Family Room, Kids Bedroom & shared Bath

Huntersville, NC

This project is all about the KIDS and includes three rooms redesigned for brothers who are best friends: a shared bedroom, a bathroom, and a family entertainment room. Working kiddos’ personalities into stylish spaces can be a balancing act. These rooms are big on color for wow factor, with playful touches for a dose of whimsy. The lucky little boys who live here had a hand in choosing their favorite décor for display, They helped select the color palettes, too. Allowing kids to participate in the process makes designing a space they love as much as their parents do possible.

Living Room Design: Bold, Moody & Movie-Ready

In the bonus room, we leaned into cozy with a dramatic color palette featuring Sherwin-Williams Black of Night SW 6993. A deep, comfy sectional from Ashley Furniture anchors the space, paired with a modern coffee table and layered rug sourced from Lowe’s and Safavieh. Floor-to-ceiling curtains from IKEA frame the windows, while Magnolia Home’s Cross Stitch wallpaper adds quiet texture behind the TV. This space is built for gathering—whether it’s a family movie night or a post-game hangout.

We brought together a mix of national brands and North Carolina-based vendors to create a home that feels collected—not cookie-cutter. From art framed at Mooresville’s Four Corners Framing to vintage accessories sourced at The Depot at Gibson Mill to Charlotte-based furniture finds and custom painted pieces, this project is full of thoughtful details and local charm.

Boys’ Bedroom & Bathroom: Personal, Playful & Grown-Up Enough

This shared bedroom balances personality and practicality. Bassett Furniture beds and dresser set a timeless foundation, while custom-painted knobs and Heirloom Traditions Paint in Monarchy add a splash of style. The layered bedding from Eastern Accents and Pillowfort feels soft but structured, while a pin board from Pottery Barn Teen—upholstered in fabric by Stout Textiles—gives each boy a space to display their world.

We added a bold drapery moment with Thibaut fabric (via local rep @kj_thibaut_ncrep) and fun, modern name signs by House of Rounds. The dresser mirror from Uttermost ties it all together, giving the room a grounded focal point. Local accessories from The Depot at Gibson Mill add charm and a touch of discovery.

For the bathroom, we brought in custom wallpaper via Spoonflower designer @micklyn to give this space a sense of fun. A Charlotte-sourced vanity light from West Elm Charlotte complements the vintage-style mirror refinished with Heirloom Traditions Paint in Naples. The drop-leaf table, also refinished in Amalfi blue, doubles as a surface for towels or books.

Kid-friendly art from Smallwoods, Weekend Print, and Four Corners Framing keeps things playful, while accessories from Marvel Studios and Target remind us this bathroom is very much in use by real kids—with real opinions.

The client story

“Our house is the ‘fun house’ always filled with growing boys, and we want it to stay that way. I wasn’t sure we could create awesome spaces for the grownups to appreciate but durable enough for the kids to enjoy. Even though I’m married to a designer, I have a hard time seeing the vision. I’ve learned to trust the process (like I have a choice), and I’m glad I did. I remember walking into our bonus room and being shocked at the transformation. I know we designed it for the kids, but I love being in there, too. Even if you’re nervous, just go for it – you’ll be happy you did. (Most importantly, your wife will be happy, too!)”
